Democratic Socialist Janeese Lewis George Wins D.C. Mayor With Nearly 85 Percent and Says She Is Open to Working With Trump, Fox News Reports
Fox News says the 38-year-old councilmember, whom Trump called a 'communist' in June, won the ranked-choice vote easily. She says she will work with the administration and also stand up to it, and promises a forensic review of every District agency.
Janeese Lewis George, a Democratic socialist, won the race for mayor of Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, Fox News reports, and said she is willing to work with the Trump administration.
The result. Fox says the 38-year-old D.C. councilmember took nearly 85% of the ranked-choice vote, per the latest data from the District of Columbia Board of Elections. Her opponents were Green Party candidate Robert Gross and independent Rhonda Hamilton. She replaces Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat who took office in 2015 and said last year she would not run again. Bowser wrote on X that she will "run through the tape and support a seamless transition."
What she said. Lewis George told FOX 5 DC: "The people of D.C. elect the mayor of D.C., and I am willing to work with this administration to the benefit of D.C. residents. And I'm also willing to stand up to this administration when it comes to doing just that." She said an early step will be "a forensic analysis of every District agency" to account for savings, spending, "and also fraud and abuse and mishandling." She told The Associated Press earlier this year she would focus on the "affordability crisis" in D.C., which she blamed in part on federal layoffs and what she called militarized streets.
The Trump history. After her June primary win, Trump wrote on Truth Social that she is a "Communist" who wants to defund the police, expand cashless bail and oppose ICE, and that he would not let her "destroy" the city. He also said he would meet with her.
The wider trend. Fox notes she joins other Democratic socialist mayors, including Zohran Mamdani of New York City, Katie Wilson of Seattle and Mayor-elect David Morales of Providence, Rhode Island.
What we could not check. The vote share is Fox's reading of the Board of Elections data, and we have not looked at the Board's results page. The descriptions of her platform come from the president's post and her own statements to Fox 5 and the AP.
