Video: New Jersey Gov. Sherrill Says for Every Step She Takes on Costs, 'the Federal Government Takes About Ten Steps Back'

Asked on MS NOW's 'Morning Joe' why people leave her high-cost state and what a Democratic Congress would change, the governor listed her own steps and blamed the war, gas prices and tariffs. Breitbart posted the clip with a transcript.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat, was pressed on affordability in her state less than a week before the midterms, in a clip Breitbart posted Thursday.

The setting. Sherrill appeared on MS NOW's "Morning Joe." We summarize the transcript Breitbart published and did not watch the video ourselves.

The question. Host Stephanie Ruhle noted that cost of living and housing costs are high in New Jersey and that people leave the state because of it. She asked whether, if Democrats win big Tuesday, there is anything specific that would make life more affordable there.

The answer. Sherrill said her administration has "hit the ground sprinting." She listed freezing rate hikes, expanding power generation to bring costs down, and a housing plan built largely on state-owned property to build 40,000 homes. She said she held a "big permitting press conference" the day before and that these steps are making "real impact."

The turn. Then she said: "But for every step forward I take in the state, the federal government takes about ten steps back. Like I said, with the war and the gas prices, with the tariffs on Canada and lumber and trying to build homes, everything they do raises costs on families." She said that is why it matters to "flip the House and flip the Senate," so Democrats have "partners on the Hill to hold him accountable" and push federal costs down.

Note for readers: the blame she places on federal policy is her own claim, and the host's question about people leaving the state went largely unanswered in the quoted exchange. To hear her in full, watch at the link below.
