Video: Chris Christie on ABC Says 'the Trump Era Is Over' After Abbott, Paxton and Darline Graham Lose; Jonathan Karl Cites Voter Poll on Trump's Priorities
A Breitbart clip post from ABC's Tuesday election coverage. We relied on Breitbart's written transcript, not the video. The comments are Christie's and Karl's.
Breitbart posted a clip of former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on ABC News' election night coverage Tuesday, as Democrats won the House and Senate.
What he said. After anchor David Muir noted that Democrat Gina Hinojosa had won the Texas governor's race, Christie said: "When you put Darline Graham losing, Paxton losing, and now Abbott losing, the Trump era is over. It is over. You cannot lose at this level." He projected "maybe 240 seats in the House," a Democratic Senate majority and "near-27 Democratic governors." Of Greg Abbott, a three-term governor, he said: "I don't care what the president says on Truth Social. The Trump era is over and it's over tonight."
The voter poll. ABC's Jonathan Karl cited the network's voter poll question on whether Trump "has the right priorities." Karl said 60 percent in Ohio said no, 61 percent in Texas said no, and 57 percent in South Carolina said no, one day after Trump's closing argument at the Reflecting Pool. He said ABC has seen this "repeatedly in these deep red states."
Why it matters here. Christie is a Republican who has been critical of Trump, and his reading is one of many. Our earlier reports covered Trump's own response, that he "wasn't on the ballot," and columns arguing the results are about candidate quality and prices rather than the end of an era.
What we could not check. This post summarizes Breitbart's written account of a video. We did not watch the segment, so we cannot vouch for tone, context or anything left out. The seat and governor projections were Christie's estimates on air. We have not seen the ABC poll tables.
