Trump Tells Voters 'You Only Have Yourselves to Blame' for Thursday's Stock Sell-Off, Washington Examiner Reports

In Truth Social posts Thursday night the president said the market 'crashed' because of Tuesday's results and told Americans their 401(k)s dropped because of Democrats. The Examiner says the sell-off tracked AI stocks and investor worry over data center limits.

President Donald Trump has blamed Thursday's stock sell-off on voters who elected Democrats, the Washington Examiner reports.

The posts. On Truth Social on Thursday evening, Trump wrote: "The Stock Market crashed today because the Dumocrats had a big Tuesday. So sad to see, you only have yourselves to blame!" In a second post he said the market "suffered one of the Worst Days in History based on the results of the Election," that "your 401(k)s have, therefore, dropped," and "it wasn't Republicans, it was Dumocrats." He ended with: "Do not fear, however, we will soon, one way or the other, be BIGGER AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE."

The numbers. The Examiner says Democrats retook both chambers, reaching at least 253 House seats and at least 54 Senate seats. It says the Nasdaq composite fell more than 5 percent Thursday. Our earlier report, from Fox Business, put the Nasdaq down 5.52 percent and the Dow down 1,833 points. The Examiner says the move reversed Wednesday's post-election rally.

The reason. The Examiner ties the sell-off to losses in artificial intelligence stocks and to investor worry that Democratic winners, such as Sen.-elect Sherrod Brown in Ohio and Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa in Texas, criticized the spread of data centers. It notes that data center moratoriums became popular with candidates in both parties, and that New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has already put one in place this year.

Why it matters here. The president is linking a one-day market drop to the election. The Examiner's own account gives a narrower reason: AI and data center stocks, not the market as a whole. One day does not show a trend, and the report offers no analyst saying the election caused the drop.

What we could not check. We did not see the posts themselves, only the Examiner's quotes. We did not check the seat counts, which may change as late races are called, or whether the Dow and S&P figures match the Fox Business close. The Examiner links to a story about Elon Musk's net worth, which we did not read.
