Target Offers a $30 Thanksgiving Meal for Six, About $10 More Than Last Year's Deal for Four
The nine-item bundle runs Nov. 8 through Nov. 29 and works out to about $5 a person. Fox says Aldi, Sam's Club, Costco and Walmart have their own offers, and shoppers online were split on the value.
Another big retailer is joining the Thanksgiving price race, Fox News reports.
The deal. Target's $30 meal is about $10 more than last year's, which fed four. This year's feeds six, which Target says keeps the cost near $5 a person. It has nine grocery items: a Butterball turkey up to 10 pounds, a 3-pound bag of russet potatoes, cranberry sauce, two cans of green beans, cream of mushroom soup, fried onions, stuffing mix, turkey gravy and two take-and-bake baguettes. It is valid Nov. 8 through Nov. 29, before tax, and is not offered in Alaska or Hawaii. Shoppers cook everything themselves.
The extras. Target is also promoting $5 sides, pies, appetizers and wine, and says a 79-cent-per-pound Good & Gather frozen turkey deal starts in November.
The rivals. Fox says Aldi's meal feeds 10 for under $39, Sam's Club has an 11-item feast for 16 people for about $160, Costco has an online-only $199.99 bundle that serves eight, and Walmart's $35 basket is advertised to feed 10. Fox cautions that prices, servings and the food included vary: Target's list is ingredients, while Costco's bundle includes prepared sides and desserts.
The reaction. In a Twin Cities Reddit thread, shoppers argued over whether the bundle had fewer potatoes and more green beans. One commenter on a consumer journalist's Facebook post said a 10-pound turkey "doesn't feed six people at my house," and another asked about dessert. Others thought it was a fair price given that grocery costs remain high.
