A Spokane County, Washington, sheriff's deputy has died and a second remains on life support after a gunman ambushed a SWAT team at a domestic violence call, Fox News reports. Its headline counts four dead in all.

How it began. Deputies went to a home Tuesday after a woman ran to a neighbor's house and said her brother had shot her, according to FOX 13 Seattle, which Fox cites. Responding officers learned the suspect had an active felony arrest warrant and access to multiple guns, and that more victims could be inside.

The ambush. The sheriff's office sent a SWAT team. "SWAT team members and deputies approached the house, attempted to breach the door and were met with gunfire," Sheriff John Nowels said at a news conference. Deputies returned fire and pulled the two wounded deputies to safety. Both were taken to a hospital, along with the woman, who was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

What investigators found. Inside the home, investigators found one person dead. Another body was in the yard. The suspect was also found dead on the property. Authorities have not released the names of those who died.

The deputies. On Wednesday the sheriff's office confirmed one of the wounded deputies had died. He is survived by his wife and two children. The office said in a statement: "Although we know our deputies knew the risks, they bravely moved toward danger to protect others they did not know." The second deputy remains on life support and is not expected to survive. The office said that because he is an organ donor, "arrangements are being made, and he will continue to serve others with the gift of life."

What we could not check. Names, the suspect's motive and the sequence inside the house have not been released, and we did not see the news conference. This story is still developing.
