Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens Endorses Republican Mike Rogers for Michigan's Senate Seat, and Trump Calls It 'Bravery'
Two days before the election, Stevens posted a video saying she is backing Rogers over Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed. Breitbart reports it as a step beyond her appearance with Rogers at a Detroit church earlier in the day.
Rep. Haley Stevens, a Michigan Democrat, said Sunday that she is endorsing Republican Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate over her party's nominee, Abdul El-Sayed, Breitbart reports. She announced it in a video posted on X after standing beside Rogers at a Detroit church that morning, as we reported earlier today.
What she said. "Our Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away, and he's right. That's why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United State Senate today," Stevens said. She added that she does not stand with the streamer Hasan Piker, and that what children see and who Michiganders are "is not hate. And is not what we are getting out from our Democratic nominee right now." She also said she is still a proud Democrat and wants to "declare who we are as Michiganders."
How it got here. Breitbart says the New York Times and Politico reported that El-Sayed's campaign told Stevens to stay away from its remaining events after she urged him to disavow an anti-Israel ad. Her fiance, who is Jewish, said earlier in the week that he is voting for Rogers. As late as Friday she was slated to appear at an event with Rep. Jim Clyburn and El-Sayed. A Clyburn adviser said, "This is not Abdul's event." Clyburn went ahead with his appearance with El-Sayed after the endorsement and did not take reporters' questions, Breitbart says.
Trump's reaction. In a Truth Social post, the president called the endorsement "BIG" and said Stevens showed "great and almost unprecedented loyalty to the Great People of Michigan." He wrote: "It's a thing called bravery, and few people have it like just displayed by Congresswoman Haley Stevens!" Trump's post is covered in a second Breitbart report: https://www.breitbart.com/midterm-election/2026/11/01/trump-stevens-displayed-bravery-backing-rogers-over-el-sayed/
The other side. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement that Senate Democrats are united behind El-Sayed, who he said would "fight for the interests of working families." He called Rogers "a tool of Donald Trump and billionaire donors" and said Republicans have made "racist, Islamophobic, and over-the-top false attacks" on El-Sayed.
What to keep in mind. Breitbart's coverage is openly partisan, and we left out its labels for El-Sayed. The El-Sayed campaign's own response to the endorsement is not in these reports. The race is one of the most-watched in the country, with Election Day on Tuesday.
