The Associated Press says Democrats have won control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Together with the Senate majority the AP reported earlier, that gives Democrats control of both chambers of Congress, according to the AP.

The call. The AP's results page posted "Democrats have won control of the U.S. House" at 6:24 a.m. UTC, which is 12:24 a.m. Central (1:24 a.m. Eastern) on Wednesday, November 4. The AP says it declares House control when one party reaches 218 seats. At 12:20 a.m. Central the AP's House tally showed 214 Democrats and 126 Republicans with 95 seats still to be called. By about 1:09 a.m. Central it showed 223 Democrats and 132 Republicans. These tallies are unofficial and still moving.

The Senate. The AP reported earlier that Democrats have won the Senate. Its Senate page, updated at 12:49 a.m. Central, showed 53 Democrats and 42 Republicans, with 5 seats still to be called.

The Speaker's chair. An AP headline says Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is poised to become the first Black Speaker of the House. That is the AP's description of where things stand, and the new House does not choose its Speaker until it is sworn in.

The president's response. In a phone interview with Fox News, which aired early Wednesday, President Trump said, "The Democrats did a good job. They fought hard," and added, "I don't view it as a hit on me." The AP reports that several Trump-backed candidates lost in places he won easily in 2024, and that he blamed the candidates rather than his own policies.

Also called by the AP in the last hour. Democrat Jocelyn Benson won Michigan's governor race over Republican John James, called at 12:45 a.m. Central. Michigan's Senate race is still open: Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has declared victory over Republican Mike Rogers, but the AP has not called it. The AP's page showed El-Sayed ahead with about 80% of the expected vote counted.

Still being counted. Alaska is about half counted and its mail ballots will take until mid-November. Nevada polls close at 3 a.m. Central. Several House races remain too close to call, and our Election Headquarters page tracks each one.

Opinion and reaction. This report is news, not commentary. Reaction from both parties is still coming in, and we will label any commentary as opinion when we publish it.

What we could not check. These figures come from the AP's results page and are unofficial until states certify them. We did not see an official statement from the House clerk or a state election office confirming the totals.

Where to follow. Our Election Headquarters page shows each key race, who called it and when, and the unofficial counts, updated every 15 minutes.
