The Associated Press has called Michigan's U.S. Senate race for Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, who defeated Republican Mike Rogers in the contest to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters.

The call. The AP's results page shows the call at 7:27 a.m. UTC, which is 1:27 a.m. Central (2:27 a.m. Eastern) on Wednesday, November 4. Earlier in the night El-Sayed had declared victory; our live results page held the race as not called until the AP's own call came through.

The count. The AP's page, updated at 1:58 a.m. Central, estimated about 87% of the expected vote counted. It showed El-Sayed with 2,236,824 votes (51.8%) and Rogers with 1,992,133 (46.2%). Those counts are unofficial and will change as the rest of the vote comes in. An AP Decision Team note says that when the AP declared El-Sayed the winner, Rogers needed to win about two-thirds of the uncounted vote.

The candidates. The AP describes El-Sayed as a former Detroit public health official and a progressive. It describes Rogers as a former congressman who narrowly lost the state's other Senate seat to Democrat Elissa Slotkin in 2024.

The bigger picture. The AP's results page, updated at 1:32 a.m. Central, showed 54 Democrats and 42 Republicans in the Senate. The AP reported earlier that Democrats have won control of the Senate and, at 12:24 a.m. Central, control of the U.S. House.

Also called by the AP in the last hour. Republican Gov. Jim Pillen won re-election in Nebraska over Democrat Lynne Walz, and Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur won Ohio's 9th District over Republican Derek Merrin, both called at 1:53 a.m. Central. The AP's ticker also shows Republican Kurt Alme elected to the U.S. Senate from Montana at 1:54 a.m. Central.

Opinion and reaction. This report is news, not commentary. Reaction from both parties is still coming in, and we will label any commentary as opinion when we publish it.

What we could not check. The vote counts come from the AP's results page and are unofficial until the state certifies them. We have not seen an official result from Michigan's Secretary of State.

Where to follow. Our Election Headquarters page shows each key race, who called it and when, and the unofficial counts, updated every 15 minutes.
