One of the best-known corporate law firms in the country plans to shut down, Fox Business reports.

The plan. A Weil, Gotshal & Manges spokesperson told Fox Business that the firm's Management Committee "has recommended to the partnership that the Firm pursue an orderly wind-down" and that partners are expected to vote "in the coming days." During the wind-down, over the coming months, the firm "will continue serving clients."

The firm. Weil was founded in 1931 in New York and employs about 1,200 lawyers worldwide. It handled some of the largest bankruptcies in U.S. history, including Enron and Lehman Brothers, and brings in more than $2 billion a year.

The pressure. Reuters reported that a series of prominent partner departures put mounting strain on the business. Weil also explored a merger with Willkie Farr & Gallagher, but talks produced no deal. It has hired restructuring adviser AlixPartners and intends to finish the wind-down outside of bankruptcy, Reuters said, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The comparison. Fox says it would be one of the most significant collapses in the U.S. legal industry since Dewey & LeBoeuf failed in 2012.

Note for readers: the vote has not happened, so the closure is a recommendation, not a done deal. The merger and AlixPartners details come from Reuters through Fox, not from the firm.
