Video: CNN's Paul Begala Says Trump 'Is the Problem, Not the Solution' for Republicans and That Paxton Is Not Likely to Be Carried Over the Line by Two Texas Rallies
On CNN's The Source, the Texan Democrat said some of Trump's base is angry with him and with Paxton, and pointed to gas prices and imported beef. Breitbart posted the clip with a transcript.
A CNN analyst made the case that the president hurts his own side in Texas, Breitbart reports in a clip post.
The setting. Paul Begala spoke Tuesday on CNN's "The Source" with host Kaitlan Collins. We summarize the transcript Breitbart published and did not watch the video ourselves.
The question. Collins noted that Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico describes the race as a fight between "David and Goliath" against Ken Paxton, the president's pick, and asked whether Trump's two Texas rallies that day would be enough to get Paxton "over the finish line." (Breitbart's transcript spells the name "James Tellico.")
The answer. "I don't," Begala said. He said he understands the president is trying to rally the base and that he respects that, but "a good bit of his base is angry with him and even angrier with Ken Paxton." Then: "I don't think that more Trump out there is good for the Republican Party. Trump is the problem, not the solution."
The economics. Begala said gas prices are up for Texans, and that "it doesn't create jobs in Texas to bring oil from Venezuela any more than it helps American beef producers in Texas that he's importing beef." He added: "It's like he doesn't even get his audience."
Note for readers: this is one Democratic analyst's opinion and a prediction, not a poll result. Our own earlier coverage of the Texas race reports a Fox News poll showing Paxton and Talarico tied at 49 percent. To hear his words in full, watch the clip at the link below.
