Breitbart posted a short video and write-up in which Coast Guard rescue swimmer Josh Law, 24, recalls pulling 16 people from the Pacific Ocean in the early hours of Oct. 16.

What happened. Per Breitbart, citing the Associated Press, the rescue took place about 140 miles off the coast of Mexico on a route often used by migrant smuggling boats. The crew at Coast Guard Air Station Ventura in California was alerted to a boat sinking off Ensenada, Mexico. Law and helicopter pilot Lt. Miyako Miller were among four crew members who rushed out in darkness.

The rescue. Miller said she navigated by the stars because there was no moonlight. Law swam to each person and got them into the rescue basket, even as his dry suit filled with water. He said the people were panicking amid large waves: "I had to get them to the basket in any way I could." On the flight to San Diego he treated three people whose injuries appeared to be shark bites.

The aftermath. Eleven other people at the scene were never found, CBS 8 reported. Federal authorities are investigating, and Mexican officials said those rescued were Mexicans. Customs and Border Protection said it would process the survivors under immigration law once they were medically cleared, and officials said nearly half have since been returned to Mexico.

Note for readers: we did not watch the clip and rely on Breitbart's text and the AP report it cites. The detail that the route is often used by smuggling boats comes from that reporting, and we have no information on who owned the boat. The rescue happened Oct. 16, so the story is not new, though Breitbart posted it Monday.
