Trump on Election Day: 'I Have the Ultimate Power, It's Called Veto' if Democrats Win Congress, and He Expects Them to Come to the Table

In a phone interview with CBS News, the president also pointed to the Supreme Court's Slaughter ruling and said his campaign tour 'made a big difference.' Fox reports it.

President Trump says he is ready to use his veto if Republicans lose Congress for the last two years of his term, Fox News reports.

The quote. Speaking to CBS News by phone on Election Day, Trump said: "I have the ultimate power, it's called 'veto.'" He suggested a veto standoff would push Democrats to deal: "Historically, you veto for a couple of months, and then they come and say, 'We've got to make a deal.'"

The court ruling. Trump also cited Slaughter v. Trump, the Supreme Court decision that let him fire Rebecca Slaughter, a Democratic commissioner on the Federal Trade Commission, before her term ended. "We won the Slaughter case, and the Slaughter case gives the president tremendous powers that it never had before," he said.

The campaign push. Trump said the GOP was written off 30 or 40 days ago and now people say "we could even win it." He credited his travel: "I did 29 days, 33 of these things, and they were all massive rallies." Fox counts 30 in-person political appearances since August, including more than 27 rallies in October, plus several tele-rallies.

What we could not check. We did not hear the CBS interview and rely on Fox's quotes. Fox's report does not say which Democratic bills Trump expects to veto or what deal he has in mind.
