President Trump is back in Texas on Tuesday to help Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton in a race Fox News calls too close for comfort.

The schedule. Trump campaigns in Corpus Christi in the morning, then heads to Lubbock to rally with Paxton at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. It is exactly one week before Election Day, with early voting already underway. It is his fourth Texas visit since Labor Day, after two days in Dallas for the GOP's midterm convention, an Oct. 1 event at a Peterbilt plant in Denton and an Oct. 7 rally in San Antonio.

The race. A Fox News poll released last Wednesday has Paxton, the state attorney general, and Democratic state Rep. James Talarico tied at 49% among likely voters. Last month Talarico led 51% to 49%. They are competing to replace retiring Sen. John Cornyn, whom Paxton beat in a long primary fight. Democrats have not won statewide in Texas in more than 30 years, and Trump carried the state by nearly 14 points two years ago.

Dueling stops. Talarico is due at Texas Tech in Lubbock on Tuesday evening, the same day as Trump and Paxton.

Closing pitches. Paxton is portraying Talarico as too liberal for Texas and pointing to his past comments. Talarico is leaning on voter frustration with Trump's handling of the economy.

Where Republicans are exposed. In the poll, 69% of Democrats say they are extremely interested in the election, against 61% of Republicans. Ninety percent of Republicans back Paxton, while 98% of Democrats back Talarico. Hispanic likely voters favor Talarico 64% to 34%, a swing from 2024, when Texas Hispanic voters favored Trump by one point in the Fox News Voter Analysis. And 43% say they are worse off financially than two years ago, against 20% who say they are better off. Those who feel worse off lean heavily to Talarico.

Fox also notes Paxton's legal and personal baggage, including the 2023 impeachment vote in the Texas House, which ended in acquittal by the state Senate, and a divorce filing by his wife.

The bigger picture. Fox says the contest is one of roughly a dozen that will decide whether the GOP keeps its slim Senate majority. Texas is also central to the House fight after last year's redraw of the state's congressional map.

Note for readers: the poll figures are Fox's, from likely voters, and a tie is within any margin of error. Fox's article does not give the margin.
