# Trump Says the Iran War Will End 'Whenever I Want It To,' Agrees With Vance That It Cost Republicans, but Says 'I'd Have to Do It Again,' Breitbart Reports

In his first press questions since the midterm losses, Breitbart says the president called Vance's view 'largely true,' said the war pushed gasoline up, and still called it necessary to keep Iran from a nuclear weapon.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday the Iran war will end when he decides, and he agreed with Vice President JD Vance that the war cost Republicans at the polls, Breitbart reports.

The setting. Trump took reporters' questions at the White House ballroom construction site, where the last piece of steel went in that afternoon. Breitbart says it was his first time fielding questions from the press corps since Democrats' wins in the midterms.

On the end date. Asked when the war will be over, Trump said: "Whenever I want it to, but it's gotta be done right, and we're never going to let them have a nuclear weapon."

On Vance's claim. Asked about Vance's statement that Republicans lost because of the war, Trump said: "Well, I think it's largely true, because it drove the gasoline up a little bit short-term, and... probably it's true." He added: "But at the same time, if I had to do it again, I'd have to do it again, because long term it's the only answer. You can't let Iran have a nuclear weapon."

On the Senate. Asked whether it was "worth it to lose the Senate" over the war, he answered, "I do," and "You have no choice." He said he expected oil to rise much more than it did, and that he made the decision on that basis.

The polling Breitbart cites. A CNN exit poll found 87 percent of voters were concerned about the cost of gas, with 59 percent "very concerned" and 28 percent "somewhat concerned." On the Iran war itself, 34 percent called it a "crucial" factor in their vote and 40 percent called it "a major factor."

Why it matters here. Our earlier reports covered Vance's post blaming the war and Trump's late-night remarks on working with Democrats. Today's comments put the president on the record agreeing with the diagnosis while rejecting the conclusion that the war was a mistake.

What we could not check. We did not hear the press conference. This summary relies on Breitbart's account and the quotes it printed, and we did not verify the exit poll figures against CNN.
