President Trump signed an executive order Thursday to lower the cost of owning and financing a single-family home, the White House says. Reuters also reported the signing, describing it as aimed at cutting insurance premiums, refinancing costs and interest rates on some government-backed loans.

What the order does, per the fact sheet:

Mortgage insurance. The director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency must create a pilot program to cancel borrowers' mortgage insurance premiums proactively once they meet equity requirements based on the home's current market value. The White House calls this the removal of "a large monthly expense."

Refinancing. The FHFA director must turn the agency's title insurance waiver pilot into a permanent program, so more borrowers can use cheaper alternatives to title insurance and pay lower closing costs.

Loan rates. The Secretaries of Agriculture and Veterans Affairs are told to reduce interest rates on single-family home loans made by their departments.

Factory-built homes. The order creates a Task Force on Manufactured Housing Innovation, led by the HUD secretary and the FHFA director, to lower the cost of building homes with modern manufacturing methods, for homes eligible for federal housing programs.

The record it cites. The fact sheet lists earlier steps: a January order barring large institutional investors from buying single-family homes, a January directive for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to buy $200 billion in mortgage-backed securities, and a March order on mortgage regulation. It credits the H-1B and immigration crackdowns with lowering home prices and rents, a claim we have not checked.

Note for readers: this is the administration's own description. The fact sheet gives no savings estimate, no start date for the pilots and no rate cuts for the VA and Agriculture loans. Our related story on rising mortgage rates and buyer leverage is also in the Economy section.
