President Trump congratulated Democrats late Tuesday after the party won control of the House and the Senate, Fox News reports, and said he looks forward to working with them.

His message. "My message is congratulations to the Democrats, and I look forward to working with you for the good of our country," Trump told CBS News once results came in. He added: "I think they're gonna want to work with me. Otherwise, I'd just veto everything, and they're not gonna want that."

Why he thinks Republicans lost. Trump said he was not on the ballot and that this mattered. "I feel that I wasn't on the ballot, and there was nothing that could be done about that. If I was, we would have won," he said. He also blamed candidates: "In some cases, they didn't like the candidates, and in some cases those candidates were not my friend, and the base knows that better than anybody. And they stayed back."

The veto plan. Earlier in the day Trump told CBS, "I have the ultimate power, it's called 'veto,'" and said that after a few months of vetoes Democrats "come and say, 'We've got to make a deal.'" Later he repeated the point to Bret Baier on Fox's election coverage. "They'll send over things that are insane, and I'll veto them," he said. "And after a couple of months of vetoes, they'll go out, and they'll say, 'How do we get this stuff done? And we'll work together.'" He said he has "a lot of friends that are Democrats, believe it or not," and has already spoken to some of them.

The mood at the White House. A separate Breitbart report says a White House official described the mood inside as "defiant" and said the president's "resolve to stop the Radical Left is only going to become stronger." We read only the summary line of that report, not the full article.

Related. Our earlier report covered Trump's CBS remarks about his veto power if Democrats won Congress.

What we could not check. Several races were still uncalled when Fox published. The quotes come from Fox's account of the CBS and Fox interviews; we have not seen the full interviews. The claim that the base "stayed back" is the president's own reading and is not backed by turnout data in the report.
