# Sen. Tim Scott Says He Feels 'Vindicated' Over the DOJ's Alaska 'Decoy Dan' Probe and Calls the Alleged Plot a Crime

The NRSC chairman says Republicans warned for months about the same-name candidate and that colluding to confuse voters is illegal. Peltola's campaign denies any involvement, and the accusations remain allegations.

Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, says he feels "absolutely vindicated" after the Justice Department reportedly issued dozens of subpoenas in Alaska's Senate race, Fox News reports.

What Scott said. Speaking on "Saturday in America," Scott said the NRSC spotted the alleged scheme early. He accused independent candidate Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. of copying the campaign logo, colors and font of incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, and of trying to change his middle initial to look like the real one. "The truth is that the fake Dan, the 'Decoy Dan,' his one objective is to confuse voters," Scott said. He argued that recruiting such a candidate is illegal, and that "30 subpoenas means he could be in serious federal trouble." He also pointed to Sullivan Jr.'s Federal Election Commission filings, saying they show almost no campaign activity, and warned that lying to federal prosecutors is a felony.

The report behind it. Fox says the New York Times reported Wednesday that Democrat Mary Peltola's campaign and senior aides at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee were involved in recruiting a same-name candidate to pull votes from Sullivan. Peltola says she "knew nothing" about it. Her campaign told Fox it has "no involvement with either Sullivan campaign" and called the investigation baseless and the Justice Department "weaponized." Sullivan Jr., a retired schoolteacher, told the Associated Press in June that he entered the race on his own and is not a spoiler. Fox says it asked him and the DSCC for comment.

What to keep in mind. The plot is alleged, and the people accused deny it. The number of subpoenas comes from Scott and from Fox's word "reportedly," not from a Justice Department statement. Scott leads the Republican Senate campaign arm, so this is a partisan voice two days before the election. A federal judge on Sunday dismissed a separate Justice Department civil suit over the race, which our earlier story covers.
