Bodycam and 911 Audio From the Tampa Citibank Shooting Show Deputies Rushing In; Sheriff Says an Armed Security Guard Shot the Gunman, Fox News Reports
Fox says more than 3,200 people were on the campus and deputies arrived within a minute. A woman was killed, and the suspect died at the hospital. Our earlier report said the shooter's death was unexplained.
New video from Wednesday's deadly shooting at a Citibank campus in Tampa answers one of the questions we left open, Fox News reports.
What was released. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office put out edited body camera footage and 911 calls from the shooting at the Sabal Center. Fox says the footage shows deputies rushing in and asking bystanders for a description of the suspect. A deputy reports that a vehicle had crashed into the property and that the suspect was inside the cafeteria. An officer then announces, "Shooter is down," and the video shows deputies escorting people out. The 911 audio has a caller reporting gunfire and officials coordinating a plan to enter.
What authorities say happened. Per Fox, the suspect drove through a fence at the Sabal Park Office Development, crashed into an outdoor seating area and fatally shot a woman, then opened fire inside the cafeteria. An armed Citibank security guard shot the suspect during an exchange of gunfire, and the gunman was later pronounced dead at Tampa General Hospital, the sheriff's office said.
The response. The sheriff's office says dispatchers began getting calls about shots fired at 12:11 p.m. and deputies arrived within one minute. More than 3,200 people were on campus, and over 400 law enforcement personnel responded, including 367 deputies. Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement: "Thanks to the brave actions by the security team on-site and more than 365 deputies, this unhinged suspect was stopped before he could harm anyone else."
What changed from our first report. We said Wednesday that the victim and suspect were unnamed, and that we did not know how the shooter died. Fox now reports the guard shot him. The time of the 911 calls, 12:11 p.m., differs from the 1:34 p.m. "active threat" response time in an AP story we cited earlier. We do not know why, and we are not choosing between them.
Why it matters here. This is a case where an armed private guard is credited with ending an attack before more people were hurt, according to the sheriff. We have not seen any statement from Citibank on the guard or the victim.
What we could not check. We did not watch the footage. Fox says the video is edited. The report still does not name the victim, the gunman or a motive, and neither do we. Sheriff Chronister called the incident "targeted" in an earlier statement we covered, and this report does not explain what that meant.
