# Spain's VOX and the People's Party Agree to Stop Running Against Each Other in Senate Races Before the Nov. 29 Snap Election

VOX will pull Senate candidates in six constituencies and run a single name in 14 others. The PP will step aside in three. Sources told Europa Press the pact could yield 125 to 140 of 209 seats, enough for a three-fifths majority.

Spain's two main right-of-center parties have struck a deal on the Senate ahead of the Nov. 29 snap election, Breitbart reports.

The deal. VOX and the People's Party (PP) announced Monday that they will stop competing against each other in several Senate races. VOX secretary general Ignacio Garriga said his party will withdraw Senate candidates in six constituencies and field a single candidate in 14 others, and hopes the rest of the opposition follows. No VOX candidacies for the lower house are being withdrawn. PP secretary general Miguel Tellado said his party will pull candidates in Girona, Tarragona and Gipuzkoa, and that in the six constituencies VOX is leaving, the PP will run independents VOX proposed. In the 14 provinces with a single VOX name, Tellado said, PP voters can pick any three PP candidates, while VOX voters can pick the VOX candidate plus two from the PP.

The goal. Both sides say they want to keep the left from taking the upper house and to remove Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's government, which VOX calls a "criminal organization." Abascal said in a Tuesday interview that the left wants a Senate majority to "seize" it and take over the Constitutional Tribunal. A three-fifths majority in the Senate is needed to appoint four of that court's 12 justices. Unnamed sources told Europa Press the pact could give the two parties 125 to 140 of the 209 Senate seats.

The response. Sanchez said in a video that the parties "say the same things, vote the same way, and govern together," calling the choice one between a Spain that "moves forward" and one where "the past moves forward." Abascal answered that by Sanchez's logic, the prime minister is the same as the Basque separatist party Sortu and Hamas.
