Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., suffered a stroke over the weekend and is recovering in a hospital, his office announced, according to a Breitbart report citing the Associated Press.

What happened. Chief of staff Allison Herwitt said Murphy, 53, felt "numbness in his arm while at his son's hockey game" on Saturday and was taken to a local hospital, where doctors found he had suffered a stroke. "He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment," she said. "The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery."

The politics. Murphy was first elected to the Senate in 2012 and is not up for reelection until 2030, so he is not on the ballot Tuesday. The New York Post, quoted by Breitbart, says he is a rumored 2028 presidential contender and had been crisscrossing the country for midterm candidates, with recent stops in Michigan, Minnesota and Florida.

The medical context. Breitbart quotes the Mayo Clinic's description of a stroke as an emergency in which blood supply to the brain is blocked or a vessel bleeds. It also quotes Dr. Adam Jasne of Yale Medicine, who told WTNH that outcomes vary: some patients are back to normal by the time they leave the hospital and others have longer-term deficits, depending on the brain, the stroke and the patient's health.

What to keep in mind. Everything here comes from Murphy's office and from outlets Breitbart cites. We have not seen the AP report itself, and no doctor has described his condition in detail. We wish him a full recovery.
