A Republican group is pointing to one bright spot in a bad week, Fox News reports.

The memo. The Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) sent colleagues a late-night memo, which Fox News Digital obtained. Executive Director Adam Piper wrote that "last night was the worst election night for the Republican Party in 50 years" and called the aftermath "a category-five political hurricane" that "will take years to fully rebuild."

The environment. Piper wrote that voters, regardless of party, preferred Democratic candidates by a mean of D+13.8, compared with D+7.9 in 2006 and D+8.4 in 2018. We could not check how RAGA built that figure.

The bright spot. Fox says Piper reported that, in returns as of the memo, Republican AG candidates ran an average of 4.62 points ahead of GOP Senate candidates in comparable states and 2.12 points ahead of Republican governor candidates. They beat the Senate nominee in nine of 10 comparable states and the governor nominee in nine of 13. Iowa, Ohio and Colorado were the widest outperformers, at 9.3, 7.3 and 10.3 points ahead of their governor candidates. In Florida, Attorney General James Uthmeier won by 1.8 points, ahead of Gov.-elect Byron Donalds at 1.3. In Nebraska, Attorney General Mike Hilgers won by 12.6 points.

The limit. Piper was blunt that "there are no moral victories." Republicans lost five AG seats to Democrats, and the memo set that against a projected net loss of 51 House seats and a possible net loss of nine in the Senate. It said "no amount of outperformance can make up for the historical Republican losses."

The plan. Piper cast Republican AGs as "America's front line" and "last line of defense" against what he listed as court packing, the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, Second Amendment limits and abolishing ICE. RAGA says it spent more than $40 million this cycle, nearly twice its 2022 spending, and will start recruiting for 2027 and 2028 now.

Why it matters here. Attorneys general are the state officers who sue the federal government and defend state law. Republicans expect them to be a main route for challenging a Democratic Congress and any future Democratic administration.

What we could not check. This is an advocacy group's own memo, and Fox relays its numbers. We did not see the full memo or the returns behind the comparisons, and several races were still being counted when it was written.
