Republican efforts to protect House seats by redrawing maps mid-decade did not work in most places Tuesday night, Fox News reports.

The warning. One House Republican told Fox News Digital: "It was definitely the wrong move. One of the truisms in politics is never to overreach. We did and that was part of the reason for the backlash." Another person said Republicans in affected states had warned their governors for months. "It's a bridge too far, and clearly the bridge blew up behind them," that person said.

Texas. The GOP-led state changed the map to favor Republicans in five districts. Fox says Democrats are projected to win at least three. Reps. Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar held their seats, and Democrats won the newly redrawn 35th District. The other two races had not been called.

Florida. Fox says Republicans are on pace to lose all four seats they redrew in their favor. Democratic Reps. Kathy Castor and Jared Moskowitz are projected to win their altered districts, along with newcomer Pia Dandiya in a red-leaning seat. Rep. Darren Soto, expected to be hit hardest, is narrowly ahead in a race too close to call. Fox adds that Florida was a bright spot overall: Rep. Byron Donalds won the governor's race and every Republican incumbent kept a seat.

Ohio and Alabama. A push to make districts held by Democratic Reps. Greg Landsman and Marcy Kaptur friendlier to Republicans failed. In Alabama, Rep. Shomari Figures won another term despite a map change meant to favor Republicans.

The other side. Fox notes both parties took part. In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom led a referendum in which voters let the legislature change its own congressional map, and Fox says it appears so far to have helped Democrats there.

What we could not check. We read Fox's report. The unnamed Republicans quoted are anonymous, and several of the Texas and Florida races were still uncalled when Fox published.
