Raul Ortiz, who ran the U.S. Border Patrol under President Biden, says the southern border is quieter than he has ever seen it, Breitbart reports, citing part of an interview CBS News released Monday.

Who he is. Breitbart describes Ortiz as Chief of the Border Patrol during the Biden administration and Deputy Chief during the first Trump administration.

The question and the answer. CBS immigration correspondent Camilo Montoya-Galvez asked, "Have you ever seen the border this quiet?" Ortiz answered, "No. Never. Even after 9/11, when we pushed resources to the border, airports, to make sure that we didn't have another terroristic threat, we did not see the level of security that we're experiencing right now."

What he credits. He said consequences are the difference: returning people to their home countries and prosecuting them. "Those policies that didn't exist under the Biden administration, that exist now, are making a huge impact on what's happening," he said.

What he says about the Biden years. Ortiz called that period "a crisis, it was chaotic." He said that at first he thought the administration was ignoring what was happening on the border, then came to believe "they were actually embracing the chaos and the crisis because it fulfilled their agenda." He said the mass migration across the southwest border, in south Texas, California and Arizona, "is exactly what some of the policymakers in the White House wanted."

What we could not check. Breitbart quotes only a portion of the interview, and we have not seen the full CBS segment or its context. Ortiz's claim about the motives of Biden White House officials is his opinion; Breitbart did not report a response from the officials he describes. We have not independently checked current border crossing figures.
