Quest Diagnostics Confirms Patient Data Was Accessed in Cyberattack, Shuts Down Lab Ordering Platform
The company disabled its Quanum Lab Services Manager after finding unauthorized access Wednesday. It says core operations and patient service are not materially disrupted and expects full restoration as soon as Friday.
One of the country's biggest diagnostic testing companies has been hit by a cyberattack. Fox Business reports that New Jersey-based Quest Diagnostics confirmed Thursday that patient health or personally identifiable information was involved.
What happened. Quest says it found unauthorized access Wednesday and disabled its Quanum Lab Services Manager, a platform some healthcare providers use to order tests and see results. It also paused access to two other systems, Essential Insights and LabHQ, as a precaution, but says no data was accessed on those. The company believes some patient data was accessed but is still working out which information and how many people.
Service. Quest says its core operations and its ability to serve patients have not been materially disrupted. Providers who use the affected platform can order by paper requisition or through Quanum eLabs, and other electronic ordering systems are working. The company expects to restore full function as soon as Friday and does not expect testing delays for clients who do not use the platform.
The response. In an SEC filing Thursday, Quest said it has stopped the unauthorized access, notified federal law enforcement and hired outside cybersecurity experts. It says it will notify affected patients and providers as the law requires. It has not said whether the breach will have financial consequences and declined further comment to Fox Business.
The history. Quest reported about $11 billion in revenue in 2025. In 2019 it disclosed that a third-party billing provider, the American Medical Collection Agency, reported unauthorized access to a system holding information on about 11.9 million Quest patients. Quest said its own systems were not involved in that case.
Note for readers: the scope of this breach is not yet known. Details are as reported by Fox Business and Quest's statements quoted there.
