Vladimir Putin has warned Europe that Russia will fight if pushed, Breitbart News reports, citing Russian state media.

The remarks. Putin spoke Thursday at a Russia-Africa summit in Moscow, according to TASS, the Kremlin-run news agency. He recalled the "tragic pages of history" and said Russia wants to prevent a world war. Asked about talk in Europe of preparing for war by 2030, he said, "First of all, we are prepared, but we don't want any war with Europe." He added, "if someone wants it, let them prepare. However, they failed to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia this time and it is unlikely to become possible by 2030."

The caution. Putin said efforts to defeat Russia through Western backing for Ukraine could "go too far," and that if war came "there will be no winners." He said any war would not be Russia's fault.

The Baltic line. Putin pointed to the recent Iran war and said, "there will be a situation similar to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz." He asked whether anyone wants the same in the Baltic Sea, then said, "We don't want that. But we will respond to any challenge." Breitbart notes the Baltic is ringed by NATO and EU states and is sometimes called a "NATO lake" since Sweden and Finland joined. Russia keeps major ports at St. Petersburg and in Kaliningrad, an exclave between Poland and Lithuania.

The pattern. Breitbart says such warnings have been common in Russian politics for years, alternating with claims that Moscow only wants peace. It cites Putin's February 2024 charge that NATO was bringing "all humanity to the brink of destruction" and a March 2025 Kremlin spokesperson claim of an "Anglo-Saxon plot."

Note for readers: the quotes are Putin's, relayed through Russian state media and Breitbart, and we did not hear the speech. Breitbart's own article treats the threats as rhetoric of a familiar kind. The story does not report any change in troop positions.
