Pope Leo XIV does not need any further treatment for lung cancer, his doctors said Wednesday.

The announcement. Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora made the statement just over a week after surgeons removed a tumor from the pope's right lung. "The final histopathology and molecular testing reports on the tissue removed during the Holy Father's surgery were issued today," they said. "The results confirmed that the tumor was a lung adenocarcinoma and that the disease was localized. A subsequent oncological assessment has confirmed that no further treatment is necessary."

The surgery. The operation took place October 13 at Rome's Gemelli Hospital. It lasted about 90 minutes, with the pope in the operating room for roughly three hours, according to the Holy See. The press office said it was successful with no complications. He woke normally and returned to his room after a short observation period, Vatican News reported.

Recovery. He was discharged Saturday after blood tests and a chest X-ray showed he was well enough to return to the Vatican, and thousands of supporters outside the hospital shouted "Papa!" Before leaving he visited the children's oncology ward, where young patients had sent him letters. One, from a girl named Eleonora, read: "May God, the Most Holy Virgin, and the guardian angels always protect you." Her mother told the pope her daughter is now healthy, according to the Vatican.

Earlier coverage. Fox notes the pope was welcomed back to deliver the Angelus prayer days after the operation, and that while recovering he urged Putin to agree to a ceasefire in a Russian-held Ukrainian city.

What the report does not say. It does not describe a schedule for follow-up checkups, and it does not say when the pope will resume his full public calendar.
