A tanker was hit by two projectiles in the Persian Gulf on Wednesday, Breitbart reports, as Iran makes new claims about the Strait of Hormuz.

The attack. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said the tanker was struck by "two unidentified projectiles" about 50 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar, one of the country's northernmost cities and close to the Gulf entrance of the strait. Its Thursday morning bulletin said the "status of the crew, damage assessment, and environmental impact are unconfirmed at present."

Iran's account. Breitbart says Iranian state television reported Thursday that two oil tankers and a towboat hit mines in the strait and caught fire. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said the ships were damaged while using "unauthorized passages." It said the tugboat was hurt while trying to help one of the others. By Thursday afternoon, Iranian forces claimed five ships in all had been damaged by naval mines. None was named, and it was not clear whether any matched the tanker the UK center described.

The drone claim. The Guard also said its electronic warfare unit took control of two American LUCAS drones, made them land and captured them. Iran's news agency quoted the Guard as saying the U.S. is encouraging ships to use the mined route and shifting heavy insurance costs onto American taxpayers and regional allies.

The doubts. Breitbart quotes The National as saying there was "little to confirm Iran's claims." It also says the UK center reported last month that it was struggling to confirm attacks in the region because many ships run "dark" with transponders off, and many do not report attacks.

Why it matters here. We have followed the blockade, Hormuz tolls and the talks through Qatar. A hit this close to Qatar lands while mediators there are trying to broker a deal.

What we could not check. We could not verify the strike, the mine claims, the drone capture or the ship count, and the owner and flag of the tanker are unknown. Breitbart relies on the UK center, Iranian state media and The National. We saw no U.S. response.
