# Opinion: Steve Moore Says Trump Should Address the Nation Tonight and Order Gas Prices Down 50 Cents a Gallon After the Midterm Rout

The Fox News column lists what the president could do right now: suspend the 18.4 cent federal gas tax, drop renewable fuel rules, push permitting reform and veto energy bills. The views are Moore's, and the legal authority he assumes is untested.

This is a Fox News opinion column by Steve Moore. The views are his, not ours.

The argument. Moore opens by telling Republicans they "got run over by a Mack truck" and that the day of sulking is over. He says nearly every pollster agrees the landslide came from gas prices and affordability, even if ICE raids, the war, weak candidates and tariffs also hurt. He says Trump can act now, "not next week."

The plan. Moore wants a national address "tonight" admitting voters are angry and financially stretched, and a pledge that every policy for the next two years is judged by whether it helps working families, farmers, ranchers and small businesses pay bills. He wants the president to:
- Veto any Green New Deal legislation that raises energy costs.
- Issue an emergency order to cut pump prices by 50 cents a gallon or more, and ask Congress to pass it when it returns Nov. 9 if Democrats challenge his authority.
- Suspend the 18.4 cent federal gas tax until prices fall below $4, and suspend renewable fuel rules he says add as much as 45 cents a gallon.
- Press Congress for permitting reform for new refineries and pipelines, and challenge governors to cut their gas taxes. He says California and Illinois charge more than 70 cents on top of the federal tax, and that ending the ethanol mandate could drop prices by more than $1 a gallon in some states.
- Ask Democratic leaders what their affordability plan is, and point to Newsom's offshore drilling ban and Mayor Karen Bass's 20-year drilling ban.

His close: "Now that's real affordability. That's what voters just voted for."

Why it matters here. It is a sample of the advice conservative commentators are giving the White House, and it shows the party's view that gas prices are the quickest fix.

What we could not check. This is opinion. We did not verify his gas-price math, the 45 cent and $1 figures, the California and Illinois tax rates, or whether an emergency order could lower prices by 50 cents. We did not verify his claims about Newsom, Bass or New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill.
