# Opinion: Larry Kudlow Says the Press Is Ignoring an Economic Boom and Fixating on Gasoline Prices

Kudlow lists consumer spending, business investment, jobs and profits as proof of strength. The figures are his, and some are forecasts for data due later this week. He concedes gas and diesel prices are a real problem.

Fox Business host Larry Kudlow argues that coverage of the economy has shrunk to one number, gasoline, and left out the good news.

The concession. Kudlow says gas prices are "uncomfortably high" and a problem for some people, and that high diesel prices hurt truckers. He adds that, adjusted for inflation, prices are about the same as during the Biden years.

His case for strength. He says consumer spending grew 3.4 percent annualized after inflation in the first quarter and 3.8 percent in the second, and looks like about 3.5 percent in the third, which is due Thursday. He says same-store chain sales are up almost 10 percent over the past year and that third-quarter GDP is likely to come in around 3.5 percent. On business investment, he points to about 15 percent capital spending growth in the first half and an expected 16.5 percent in the third quarter, which he says has not been seen since the Reagan 1980s.

Jobs and prices. He says unemployment claims are near 60-year lows, the unemployment rate is barely above 4 percent, more than a million people re-entered the labor force in recent months and 72,000 manufacturing jobs have been added this year. He says prescription drug prices are down about 4.5 percent in a year and egg prices are down about 90 percent.

Profits and markets. He cites productivity growth above 3 percent a year over two years, corporate profit growth of 15 to 20 percent, stocks near record highs with more than 150 million Americans invested through 401(k)s and pensions, and 13 of the top 15 companies in the trillion-dollar club being American. He credits low taxes, light regulation and cheap energy for drawing foreign investment.

His question. "So why won't the media report the facts? It's a story that must be told."

Note for readers: this is opinion. The statistics are Kudlow's, we have not checked them, and the third-quarter figures are expectations until the government releases them. The piece does not address critics who point to other readings.
