# Opinion: Gregg Jarrett Says The New York Times Reached for a Hitler Comparison to Defend Ilhan Omar

Jarrett argues the Times editorial skips the facts of the Omar probe, that a Democratic judge signed the warrant, and that the inquiry began under Biden. Omar denies wrongdoing and has not been charged.

Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett takes aim at a New York Times editorial about the investigation of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., in a Fox News opinion column.

The target. The Times published an editorial Friday headlined "Trump Is Turning to an Old Tool of Authoritarian Repression." It argues that tyrants, Hitler among them, used "revocation of a political opponent's citizenship" to repress opponents, and implies the president is doing the same to Omar. Jarrett calls the comparison a tired cudgel and "an unmistakable deflection."

His main objection. The editors wrote, "We do not pretend to know whether the allegations have merit," and said the allegations "are not the main issue." Jarrett asks whether false statements, fraud, conspiracy and obstruction are of no consequence, and says the Times is really arguing that a Democratic member of Congress should escape suspected crimes because a president they dislike is in office.

The facts he adds. He says the original Omar investigation began under President Biden. He says a Democratic judge in Washington authorized the search of her home after finding probable cause. He says free speech is not a defense to false statements or fraud in immigration matters. He also recalls that the Times often wrote that "no one is above the law" during the Trump investigations.

The questions he raises. Jarrett asks whether her citizenship was obtained through false statements or fraud, whether there was a cover-up, and whether she took part in a sham marriage to her brother. He says her reply to the last question in a recent interview, "Not to my knowledge," deepened suspicion.

Note for readers: this is opinion. The allegations against Omar are unproven, she denies wrongdoing, and no charges have been announced. The sham-marriage question is Jarrett's, and we have not independently confirmed it. The Times editorial itself was not reviewed for this piece.
