# Opinion: David Marcus Says Californians Moving to Texas for Lower Costs Are Voting for the Policies They Left

The columnist spent a day in McKinney, Texas, talking to newcomers and longtime residents. His argument is that red states are at risk of being turned blue by their own population gains. It is an opinion column built on a few conversations.

In a Fox News column, David Marcus argues that Texas may be changed at the ballot box by people who left California.

The scene. Marcus writes from McKinney, which he calls ground zero for the migration of voters from California to Texas. He says the newcomers may help decide the Senate and governor's races and whether Texas "will continue to grow bluer."

The newcomers. He describes meeting Oren, who moved about a year ago "because it's a lot cheaper to live" but plans to vote for Democrats because he wants "more social services and public transit" and more support for transgender kids. Another man, Daniel, who runs a business, told him, "We can go anywhere we want. It's meant to be that way," and "Things change." Marcus says he met two more California arrivals who plan to keep voting Democratic.

The natives. Terry, a longtime resident, said she loves the growth but worries that Democratic politics will follow it. Clint, visiting from Oklahoma, said he cannot "comprehend" why people would leave over high taxes and then vote for them.

The case. Marcus says Americans are moving in large numbers to cheaper states, which are mostly Republican, and that Arizona and Montana have seen similar influxes, and that West Virginians fear the same from northern Virginia. He adds that decades of immigration have also moved Texas left, and he describes the new Democratic coalition as wealthy, college-educated white voters and immigrants. He says "Don't you turn my red state blue" should be the Republican mantra on Tuesday.

The limits. The column rests on a handful of interviews and gives no data on how newcomers vote. Marcus's own examples are four people who told him they plan to vote for Democrats.
