National Democrats are putting money and star power into Mississippi's Senate race a week before Election Day, Fox News reports.

The spending. The Senate Majority PAC, which has close ties to Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, reserved $1.2 million in advertising for Scott Colom, a district attorney challenging Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith. Former Vice President Kamala Harris and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have visited or are due to visit. Buttigieg was scheduled for a Gulf Coast rally Tuesday.

The Republican answer. The Senate Leadership Fund, aligned with Majority Leader John Thune, set up a seven-figure ad buy in response. President Trump rallied for Hyde-Smith in Corinth on Monday and repeated his midterm pitch: "pretend that I'm on the ballot." Her campaign manager, Jake Monssen, called the Democratic push "Washington insiders making a last-ditch effort." One GOP operative told Fox the party is "throwing s--- at the wall."

The history. Mississippi has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1982 and has consistently backed Trump. A University of Mississippi political scientist, Jonathan Klingler, told Fox the attention itself feeds a "talking point of Mississippi as evidence for momentum and building a Democratic wave." He added that Black voters are nearly 40% of the electorate, the highest share in the country, and that Colom needs to win a larger share of white voters.

Colom's pitch. He says his own ground game, built while national Democrats stayed away, could be enough. He says voters tell him about gas and grocery prices and tariffs, and he accuses Hyde-Smith of refusing to debate. The two also have a history: she blocked his Biden-era nomination to a federal judgeship. Colom says that is not his motivation.

Note for readers: Fox reports no poll in this piece, so there is no measure here of how close the race is. Quotes calling Colom radical come from Republican campaign and party officials.
