A Florida woman is accused of posing as her dead sister to make taxpayers pay her rent through a federal housing program, Breitbart News reports, drawing on court documents first reported by the Daily Mail.

The charges. Shadaryl Eddie was arrested in the Oakland Park area earlier this week. She is charged with illegal use of a personal identification and grand theft of between $5,000 and $10,000 for fraudulently getting a public housing voucher.

What the arrest report says. On March 12, 2025, Eddie allegedly gave a landlord a voucher backed by her sister's birth certificate and Social Security card. Her sister died on Dec. 11, 2024. About four months later, the landlord received a letter from the housing authority saying he owed $8,357 for her rent because the voucher was invalid and had been obtained illegally.

The cost. With the voucher voided, the landlord lost the rent and had to repay the assistance he had received. Add legal costs to evict her, and the report puts his total loss at at least $11,000. Eddie was evicted over the summer and moved to another address.

The program. Housing Choice Vouchers, commonly called Section 8, help people with disabilities, low-income families and older Americans pay rent. The housing authority pays the landlord directly, and applicants must show a government ID, Social Security card, birth certificate, proof of residency and proof of income.

What she faces. Up to three years for criminal use of a personal ID and up to five for grand theft, both felonies. She is in Broward County Jail without bail and, per the Mail, had not entered a plea or been assigned a lawyer.

Note for readers: these are charges, not a conviction. Breitbart's account rests on the arrest report as relayed by the Daily Mail. We did not see the documents.
