Melania Trump Says She Brokered a Localized Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire in the Front-Line City of Oleshky
The White House says both sides agreed to pause fighting around Oleshky, in southern Ukraine, so aid can get in and civilians can get out. It covers one area only.
First lady Melania Trump said Friday that she helped broker a temporary ceasefire on one front of the Russia-Ukraine war, the Washington Examiner reports.
The terms. According to the White House, the pause begins Thursday and is limited to the Oleshky area of southern Ukraine. The Examiner says both Ukraine and Russia agreed to halt operations there so humanitarian aid can come in and civilians can be evacuated.
Her statement. "The situation in Oleshky is dire," Melania Trump wrote. "Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. Oleshky's remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water." She said residents have limited electricity, live among mined roads and endure regular military attacks.
How it happened. The first lady said the pause came through channels she built while asking Russia to reunite Ukrainian children taken by Russia with their families. The Examiner says she has reunited more than 30 such families so far. She also said she sent an "impartial American media association" to the region "to accompany and document Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground throughout the process." The statement does not name the group.
The larger picture. The Examiner notes the announcement comes as President Trump's lead negotiators have reopened the peace process with both countries. Breitbart also ran the story Friday and carried a senior adviser's description of it as a "meaningful step toward lasting peace."
Note for readers: the White House did not immediately answer the Examiner's questions about the details, and we have only the first lady's account. Neither the Russian nor the Ukrainian government statement was in the source we read. Treat the start date and scope as the White House's claim until the two sides confirm them.
