Late-night television will mostly be off the air when the midterm results come in, Breitbart News reports, citing TheWrap.

The plans. ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" will pre-record Tuesday's episode, covering early East Coast results but not airing live on the West Coast with the final outcomes. Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" is expected to tape before polls close in New York. NBC's "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" and "Late Night With Seth Meyers" will reportedly not air that night at all.

The gap. CBS's "The Late Show" was canceled earlier this year, so it will have no episode Tuesday "or ever again," Breitbart writes. Stephen Colbert used to go live with midterm coverage.

The history. Breitbart says the last time late-night skipped live election coverage was 24 years ago. Jon Stewart went live on "The Daily Show" for the 2002 midterms, and others followed by adjusting their taping schedules. In 2022 only Kimmel and Colbert went live. In 2018, in President Trump's first term, Trevor Noah's "Daily Show," Colbert, Kimmel and Meyers all covered the election.

The stakes. Breitbart notes Republicans control both the House and the Senate and that this cycle could shift either or both.

Note for readers: the plans come from TheWrap's report as relayed by Breitbart, and we have not seen network statements. Breitbart's piece offers no reason for the networks' choices, so we do not guess at one.
