A new question about the Defense Secretary's household arrived the day after the midterms, from the Daily Caller, which cites a Politico newsletter.

The report. According to a Wednesday Politico report, Jennifer Hegseth, wife of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, was hired by the Trump-connected consulting firm Watchtower Strategy and paid for consulting work, the Caller says. Politico noted that the weapons maker Lockheed Martin was one of Watchtower's clients in 2025. The Caller adds that Jennifer Hegseth is the daughter of a Lockheed Martin executive, citing a New York Times profile. The Caller's own headline calls the arrangement a "swamp bonanza," which is its characterization.

The responses. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell told Politico: "Secretary Hegseth and his wife are in full compliance with all ethics laws and regulations, and their sole focus is serving our warfighters, President Trump, and the American people." A Watchtower spokesperson said: "It should be no surprise that a public affairs firm would want to work with one of the biggest former star producers at Fox News." The spokesperson said she "has assisted us in navigating conservative TV media," and that "She has not interfaced with any clients nor does she provide any advice to Watchtower on defense matters."

The wider frame. The Caller says the second Trump administration has faced corruption allegations from watchdog groups and congressional Democrats. It lists critics' complaints about the Trump family's crypto firm, a link to an Emirati national security adviser, pardons for wealthy donors and figures tied to crypto platforms, and the funding of the president's ballroom. These are critics' claims as the Caller summarizes them.

The polls. A Gallup survey found a record-high 89 percent of Americans think government corruption is widespread, including 91 percent of Democrats, 90 percent of independents and 83 percent of Republicans, the Caller says. A CNBC poll from late October found 36 percent of registered voters ranked corruption as the most important issue, ahead of food costs at 34 percent and gas prices at 23 percent.

Why it matters here. Hegseth is already under pressure. Rep. Thomas Massie told him to resign or face impeachment articles, which we covered. Democrats now control the House from January and have promised oversight.

What we could not check. We did not read the Politico item or the Gallup and CNBC polls. The report does not say how much she was paid or what the work was beyond the firm's description. It does not allege any rule was broken, and the Pentagon says none was.
