If you ever bought a red hat or gave a few dollars to a Republican campaign, a new Senate memo says your information may be sitting in a federal file.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, released findings on Wednesday saying former Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation of President Trump obtained personal data on at least 639,000 people tied to the Republican Party. According to the Daily Caller News Foundation, the data included names, dates of birth, physical and email addresses, and voter registration records. CBS affiliates reporting on the release add that it included occupations and credit card information, and that nearly 150,000 political donors were affected, some of whom gave as little as $1.

One spreadsheet, according to the reports, covered people who bought Trump's signature red "Make America Great Again" hats after the 2020 election. Smith's sweep was ostensibly focused on the events of January 6, 2021, but the Daily Caller reports it captured data going back to 2005.

Grassley said he obtained the information from whistleblower disclosures. In his memo he called the collection "incredibly invasive," and said it went "beyond what could conceivably be necessary" for Smith's team to fulfill the special counsel's mandate. "The new findings further corroborate that Smith and his partisan team aimed to map out the entire Republican Party apparatus," Grassley said. He called on Democratic colleagues to join his oversight work rather than defend Smith.

Maryland Republican state Del. Kathy Szeliga told The National News Desk she was among those whose information appeared in the records. "That's me. I and millions of others did indeed purchase that red hat," she said. "It is chilling and frightening."

This is not the first release. The Daily Caller says earlier Grassley documents showed Smith's team obtained at least 4,782 personal checks from everyday Americans making mostly small donations, and that the Justice Department and FBI still hold donors' home addresses, bank account and routing numbers, and signatures.

The Daily Caller also notes the new findings cut against Smith's sworn testimony on Sept. 29 that his investigation was not motivated by partisan politics.

One caution for readers: these are Grassley's findings, drawn from whistleblower disclosures, and they reflect his characterization of the investigation. The sources we reviewed do not include a response from Smith. But the numbers raise a fair question that deserves an answer under oath: why did a prosecutor need the shopping habits of hat buyers?
