ICE Sends Indian National Back to Oregon to Face Manslaughter Charges After County Released Him Despite Detainer

Rajinder Kumar is charged in a November 2025 crash that killed two newlyweds. ICE says Deschutes County freed him in April without honoring its request to hold him. The county's side is not in the reports we read.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has handed a 32-year-old Indian national back to Oregon authorities so he can stand trial in a deadly highway crash.

According to ANI, which quotes a post ICE made on X Sunday, Rajinder Kumar was transferred to the Deschutes County Jail. He has been indicted on two counts of first-degree manslaughter and related charges over a November 2025 tractor-trailer accident. ICE describes the victims as "two newlywed Americans." ANI also lists reckless endangerment among the charges.

The detainer dispute. ICE says that after Kumar's local arrest it lodged an immigration detainer with the jail, a request to hold him for federal agents. It says that in April 2026 Deschutes County released him "without honoring ICE's detainer." ICE officers then found and arrested him "at large earlier this year," the agency says.

The immigration history. ICE says Border Patrol apprehended Kumar near Lukeville, Arizona, on Nov. 28, 2022, after he illegally entered the country from Mexico, and placed him in removal proceedings. The agency adds that a pending application "does not confer legal status in the United States."

What happens next. Deportation proceedings stay on hold until his state criminal trial ends. ICE says it will pursue his immigration case afterward and "will continue using every lawful tool available to protect the American people from criminal activity committed by illegal aliens."

Caveats. The account of the release and the detainer comes from ICE. The reports we read do not include a response from Deschutes County, and we do not know why he was released or whether a court set the terms. Kumar is charged, not convicted. We did not find his plea or a trial date.
