ICE Takes a Cuban Man Into Custody in Pennsylvania on Charges He Voted Illegally, Breitbart Reports
Homeland Security agents arrested Osmal Sanchez Loy on Oct. 23, Breitbart says. He was ordered deported in 2009 and stayed 17 more years. He is charged in federal court, not convicted of voting.
Breitbart News reports that immigration agents have taken a man into custody in a swing state on charges he voted in U.S. elections as a foreign national.
The arrest. Breitbart says Homeland Security Investigations agents arrested Osmal Sanchez Loy of Cuba on Oct. 23 on charges brought in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. ICE has custody of him, the outlet reports.
The record. According to Breitbart, Sanchez Loy was convicted on drug crimes in 1987 and of receiving stolen property in 1991. It says he stayed on a visa and never became a lawful permanent resident. An immigration judge ordered him deported in April 2009, but he was not removed and remained in the country for 17 years.
The statement. HSI Special Agent in Charge Nathan Abel told Breitbart: "Protecting our electoral integrity remains a top priority." He added: "We will continue working with our partners to hold violators accountable."
The context. Breitbart ties the arrest to the Trump administration's push against noncitizen voting. It says the Department of Homeland Security announced arrests of more than a dozen people accused of illegally voting earlier this week.
What we do not know. Breitbart's report does not say which elections he allegedly voted in, when, or how he registered. It carries no comment from him or an attorney, and we did not find a court filing. The voting allegation is a charge, not a conviction.
