A Hong Kong court has added a decade to the prison term of its best-known democracy activist, Breitbart reports.

The sentence. Breitbart's Christian K. Caruzo writes that the court on Thursday sentenced Joshua Wong, 30, to 10 more years for "colluding with foreign forces," under the National Security Law. Breitbart cites the BBC for the sentence. Wong had already spent roughly six years in jail and was serving about five years on a subversion charge, with a release date expected in January 2027. Breitbart says he is now expected to stay imprisoned until 2036, when he will be 40.

The plea and the reduction. Citing Deutsche Welle, Breitbart says Wong pleaded guilty in September. Judge William Tam set a starting sentence of 13 years and cut it to 10 for the plea, with no further reduction. Breitbart says the offense can carry up to life in prison when judged serious.

The charge. Per Breitbart, prosecutors said Wong and fellow Demosisto co-founder Nathan Law, who lives in exile, asked foreign countries and international organizations to impose human rights sanctions on Beijing over the 2020 crackdown, between July and November 2020. Prosecutors reportedly called both men "masterminds" and "ring-leaders." The judge said the court needed "to express the community's abhorrence" of the scheme.

The reaction. A spokesperson for the U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong told AFP that Wong "has been unjustly imprisoned since December 2020, demonstrating that Beijing will go to extraordinary lengths to silence those who advocate for fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong," and called for his immediate release. Breitbart quotes Wong's friend Frances Hui, who lives in the United States, telling the BBC she felt "heartbroken" and "outraged." Breitbart says he waved to supporters outside the court as guards led him away, and that people jailed under the law face a higher bar for early release.

Why it matters here. The case ties directly to U.S. policy toward China, and the American consulate has taken a public position on it. Breitbart's article is written from a strongly critical view of the Beijing government and the law, and the words "spurious" and "tyrannical" are its own.

What we could not check. We read most of Breitbart's article, but our copy stopped partway through the reaction section, so there may be more after it. We did not see the BBC, Deutsche Welle or AFP reports it cites, or the court's judgment. We could not confirm the 2036 release estimate, which Breitbart presents as an expectation.
