Left-wing streamer Hasan Piker has sued conservative commentator Scott Jennings over accusations that Piker supported lynching Black Americans, Breitbart reports.

The filing. The complaint was filed Oct. 27 in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. It seeks at least $27.5 million in compensatory damages and $45 million in punitive damages, for a total of at least $72.5 million, and demands a jury trial. It brings claims of defamation per se, defamation by implication as an alternative, and false light invasion of privacy. Jennings, a CNN contributor and radio host, is the only defendant.

What it says happened. The suit concerns an Aug. 11 broadcast of "The Scott Jennings Show" and later social media posts. Piker alleges Jennings used a roughly 42-second compilation that combined excerpts from three broadcasts, rearranged remarks and removed context. The complaint says the clip traces partly to an Oct. 29, 2024, Twitch stream in which Piker watched two Black political commentators debate criminal justice policy and sarcastically portrayed one of them as nostalgic for the era before the civil rights movement.

The caption. According to the filing, Jennings added a caption attributing to Piker the words "LET'S GO BACK TO A BETTER TIME WHEN LYNCHINGS WERE HAPPENING." Piker's lawyers say that wording appears in neither the original recording nor the compilation. They say Jennings then accused Piker of "calling for Black voters to be lynched" and referred to "the Piker plan of returning our country to lynchings."

The legal theory. The complaint says Jennings "was free to criticize Mr. Piker" and to play his actual words, but not to "knowingly attribute to Mr. Piker statements that Mr. Piker never made." It says Jennings' X post drew about 2.5 million views. Piker claims reputational harm, lost business and emotional distress, and says his lawyers demanded a retraction Aug. 31 and got no substantive response after Jennings' attorney acknowledged the letter.

Note for readers: these are Piker's allegations in a complaint, not findings. Breitbart's report does not include a response from Jennings, and we have not seen the clips or the filing.
