How it happened. Stevens had been invited to a church event with Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who narrowly beat her in Michigan's August primary. She was then disinvited. The result, Fox says, is that she was in the same church as Rogers, El-Sayed's opponent. El-Sayed's campaign also asked her to stay away from its remaining events.

The dispute. Stevens has pressed El-Sayed to condemn an outside group's ad that links U.S. support for Israel to higher grocery prices. She called the ad antisemitic. El-Sayed has said his campaign did not produce it and that he disagrees with its contents. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., who helped organize the planned appearance, said Stevens was asked to skip it because the dispute had become a distraction and upset the church's bishop.

Other details. Fox notes that Stevens' fiance, Jason Turkish, has previously endorsed Rogers and appeared at a Rogers campaign event, saying he could not support El-Sayed because of his positions on Israel.
