A child was among the casualties of Thursday's violence in the Mexican border city of Matamoros, Breitbart reports. This follows our earlier story on the three Texas bridges that were closed.

The arrest. Breitbart says Mexican National Guard and Navy personnel arrested Axel Alfredo "Titan" Cardenas as he drove a blue Lamborghini Urus down one of the city's main avenues. It describes him as the number two figure in the Gulf Cartel because his father, Alfredo "El Contador" Cardenas, leads it. Authorities then moved to take him to the Matamoros airport and on to Mexico City, where he is wanted on federal charges.

The girl. Gulf Cartel gunmen clashed with Mexican forces across the city to try to free him. In one clash, a seven-year-old girl who was born in Texas was shot and killed, and her father was wounded, as they drove through the Las Rusias neighborhood, the report says. Law enforcement sources told Breitbart News Foundation her name was Araiza "N," a convention for withholding a surname.

The rest. The gunmen also wounded a member of the city's civil protection department, who is expected to recover, burned vehicles and carjacked tractor-trailers for blockades. The U.S. government temporarily shut three international ports of entry between Matamoros and Brownsville. Mexican authorities still flew Cardenas to Mexico City, where he is in a federal detention center awaiting hearings.

The father. Breitbart says El Contador was arrested in 2022, fought extradition to the United States from a Mexican prison, was released in 2024 on a judge's ruling tied to an injunction, and has been on the run since. Its earlier report said he was in Mexican custody, so the two accounts differ on his status.

Note for readers: the piece was written by Breitbart's Cartel Chronicles writers, who use pseudonyms for safety, and relies on unnamed law enforcement sources. We found no statement from Mexican or U.S. officials confirming the girl's death. Treat the details as unconfirmed.
