A federal grand jury in Washington has refused to indict Cassidy Hutchinson, the former White House aide who testified before the House Jan. 6 committee, Fox News reports.

What happened. Two sources confirmed to Fox News Digital that the grand jury declined to bring charges after the Justice Department asked for them. The department had wanted an indictment over statements Hutchinson made to the committee in 2022, on allegations that she lied to it. Fox says the effort failed Tuesday. It is not clear whether prosecutors will make another attempt.

Who she is. Hutchinson was a top aide to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. She became one of the best-known witnesses before the committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot and President Trump's efforts to challenge the 2020 election.

The testimony in question. At a nationally televised hearing in June 2022, she described Mr. Trump's actions on Jan. 6. That included an account she said she heard from another White House official about how he reacted when told he could not travel to the Capitol. Fox notes that other people familiar with the events later disputed her account of an alleged confrontation inside the presidential vehicle.

The background. Fox News Digital reported earlier that the grand jury had heard evidence about possible false statements to the committee. A source then said more evidence could go to the grand jury the following week and that no final decision had been made. The New York Post also reported that the Justice Department was investigating her.

What this does and does not settle. Fox points out that a grand jury's refusal to indict does not decide whether her testimony was true or false. Hutchinson has said before that she stands by what she told Congress.

Note for readers: the report rests on two unnamed sources. Fox says it asked the Justice Department and the offices of Rep. Barry Loudermilk and Rep. Bennie Thompson for comment; the report does not include a response from any of them.
