The first open revolt against Republican leadership has arrived, Breitbart reports.

Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., posted a letter on social media Wednesday addressed to "Republican Senate and House 'Leadership.'" He wrote: "No, the polls were not wrong. You were. Even with record amounts of money at your disposal, you managed to get absolutely annihilated."

His charge. Steube said leaders "have been embarrassingly weak and more afraid of governing conservatively than of disappointing the voters who put us in office." He said they "governed out of fear, continually knelt to the moderates in our conference (who all got crushed last night anyway), and discarded conservatives like me who warned of last night's results."

His ask. "Please do us all a favor and step aside so new leadership can take a truly conservative direction, with the courage to do the things we were elected to do." He signed off with President Trump's familiar line, "Thank you for your attention to this matter."

The backdrop. Breitbart says Democrats won Senate seats in Michigan, Texas, South Carolina, Maine, Iowa, Ohio and Kansas, with Mississippi and Alaska still pending Wednesday morning, and will hold at least 54 seats in January. Breitbart notes that Mike Johnson has signaled he will step back by not pursuing the House minority leadership post, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune still intends to run for Senate minority leader, per Fox News.

Vance's echo. Breitbart says Steube's stance matches Vice President JD Vance's own post-election read, which blames the Iran war, high prices and a sense that Americans were not put first. Our earlier report covered Vance's comments, and a separate report covered Jim Jordan's bid for the House job.

What we could not check. This is one member's view, not a count of how many Republicans agree. We read Breitbart's account and the excerpts it quotes, not the full original post.
