Gallup Survey: 46% of Republicans Rank Patriotism a Top Value the Nation Needs, Versus 6% of Democrats, the Widest Gap in the Poll
The Gallup and With Honor survey finds Democrats lean toward equality, fairness and kindness, while Republicans lean toward responsibility and patriotism. It also finds broad agreement that respecting differing values matters.
A new Gallup and With Honor survey finds patriotism is the largest partisan divide among the values Americans say the country needs, Fox News reports.
The gap. In the survey released Sunday, 46% of Republicans put patriotism in their top three values, compared with 6% of Democrats, a 40-point difference. Independents sat in between, with 15% choosing it. Gallup says Democrats are more likely to name equality, fairness and kindness, while Republicans name responsibility and patriotism.
Each side's list. Republicans ranked patriotism first (46%), then responsibility (41%) and honesty (38%). Democrats ranked equality first (44%), then fairness (34%) and honesty (32%). Equality is the second-largest divide, at 44% of Democrats versus 10% of Republicans.
All Americans. Overall, honesty (34%), responsibility (32%) and integrity (31%) top the list of values most urgently needed.
Age. Adults 65 and older are nearly three times as likely as those 18 to 39 to say the country needs more patriotism, 32% versus 12%.
Common ground. When asked which values most Americans share, 32% named patriotism, second only to freedom at 38%. Nearly eight in 10 (79%) said respecting different values matters more than sharing the same ones, including 84% of Democrats, 81% of independents and 72% of Republicans. Seventy percent said leaders must be willing to compromise across party lines. Gallup's own conclusion: "the ultimate shared value is that Americans agree to disagree."
Note for readers: the survey was conducted May 12 to 22 among a national panel of more than 3,000 adults, so it predates this week's news. Fox does not give a margin of error. People chose from a list of 12 values, which shapes the results.
