# France Deploys 70,000 Police for Saturday Protests as Officials Treat a Shooting Near Paris as a Terrorist Attack

Macron says protests called by groups with no legitimate authority will be banned. The interior minister says Friday's shooting in Trappes, which killed one and wounded four, was 'clearly a terrorist crime' and may have been racist.

France is bracing for another weekend of unrest after a shooting near Paris that officials now call terrorism, Fox News reports.

The deployment. Seventy thousand officers, with helicopters, armored vehicles and water cannon, will be deployed across France on Saturday. President Emmanuel Macron, who canceled a planned trip to Nigeria and Senegal, said the plan is "to ban protests requested by individuals or groups with no legitimate authority." He added: "The general recommendation is that there should be no demonstrations in the coming days." Union requests will be reviewed by prefects, who may offer alternative routes to protect city centers and businesses. Macron blamed last Saturday's violence on "ultra-left groups whose aim is to bring down the Republic."

The shooting. In Trappes, west of Paris, a 39-year-old man was arrested after one person was killed and four others, including a 12-year-old girl, were wounded. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said, "The motive may be racist. The investigation is ongoing, but this is clearly a terrorist crime." AFP reported the suspect appeared to fire randomly from a vehicle, and the mayor said the person killed and at least one wounded were "of African origin." Macron said "the nation is standing with" the victims.

The permits. Nuñez, who acknowledged police "lost control" last weekend, said, "We will let absolutely nothing pass." Reuters reports the student union UNEF says its rallies will go ahead despite denied permits. Police approved only a union demonstration in Paris and rejected UNEF and the "Yellow Vest" movement.

Closures. The Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay will close, along with 24 Paris Metro stations. A Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon match set for Sunday was moved to Monday. The Steelers and Saints NFL game at Stade de France is still on for Sunday, though some events around it were canceled. A police union leader said earlier this week that political figures bear blame for those who "excuse the inexcusable, justify violence."

Note for readers: the terrorism label and the suspected racist motive come from French officials and the investigation is ongoing. The suspect has not been publicly named in Fox's report, and we cannot say what charges he faces.
