Maine's Senate race is a dead heat. A new Fox News Poll of likely voters has Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Democrat Troy Jackson at 49 percent each, with every interview completed after their Oct. 15 debate.

The mood. Maine voters are in a sour frame of mind. Only 12 percent say their family is better off financially than two years ago. Trump's job approval is 37 percent, with 62 percent disapproving and 54 percent strongly disapproving. Fifty-three percent say they are concerned Collins votes with Trump too much. Forty-six percent say they are concerned Jackson is too liberal.

Why it matters. Collins is the only GOP senator seeking re-election from a state Trump lost in 2024, which he did by 7 points. She is going for a sixth term. Asked who they want controlling the Senate, 53 percent of Maine voters pick Democrats and 45 percent pick Republicans. Nine percent of Collins supporters prefer Democratic control.

Turnout. Fox finds a gap in enthusiasm: 79 percent of Democrats and 61 percent of Republicans are extremely interested in the election. Jackson leads by 16 points among the extremely interested and by 4 among those certain to vote, and he leads by 40 among the one in five who have already voted. Collins leads by 12 among those planning to vote on Election Day. Both candidates are underwater on favorability: Jackson 47 to 49, Collins 47 to 51.

The splits. Voters under 45 lean to Collins by 6 and those 45 and older to Jackson by 3. Women back Jackson by 5 and men back Collins by 4. College graduates pick Jackson by 23, and Collins leads by 16 among those without a degree. She leads in rural areas by 7. Jackson leads among suburban voters by 18. Independents favor Collins by 13.

The governor's race. Democrat Hannah Pingree leads Republican Bobby Charles 49 to 39, with independent Rick Bennett at 9 percent.

Republican pollster Daron Shaw said Republicans "appear to be struggling with White rural voters this cycle." Democratic pollster Mikaela Linder said Collins "is no stranger to outrunning her party, but Democrats hold an 18-point enthusiasm advantage."

Method. The poll ran Oct. 16 to 20 under Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R), with 1,689 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 points, or 2.5 for the 1,514 likely voters.
