Federal agents searched several Minnesota autism service providers on Thursday, adding to a string of fraud investigations in a state already under heavy scrutiny, Fox News reports.

What happened. The FBI confirmed "court-authorized investigative activity" at multiple Minnesota locations, including the Twin Cities and Rochester, according to MPR News. Attorney General Keith Ellison's office confirmed its Medicaid Fraud Control Unit executed search warrants at Iska Inc. in St. Louis Park and Bright Horizon Therapy in Edina. The operation involved the FBI, the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, IRS criminal investigators, U.S. Postal Inspectors and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, per FOX 9. FBI Minneapolis spokesperson Matt Vogel said: "This is an active investigation, and no further details are available at this time."

The money. The Minnesota Star Tribune, reviewing state data, found Iska received more than $16.7 million in Medicaid payments from 2018 to 2025. It took part in Minnesota's Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention program for children and young people with autism, which Fox says has drawn growing fraud scrutiny.

The pattern. In April, investigators executed 22 search warrants in the state, including at autism providers and childcare businesses. In May the Justice Department announced charges against 15 defendants in alleged health care fraud schemes with more than $90 million in intended losses. One alleged $46.6 million scheme targeted the autism program, whose Medicaid claims DOJ says rose from more than $600,000 in 2018 to more than $400 million by 2025.

What is next. Fox says the searches come ahead of Vice President JD Vance's planned visit to Minnesota with members of the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.

Note for readers: no charges have been announced in connection with Thursday's searches. A search warrant is not a finding of wrongdoing, and the allegations against any individual business remain unproven.
